Police are scouring the last known home of Jane Furlong based on fresh information on the murder of the Auckland teenager two decades ago.

Miss Furlong embroidery logo, a 17-year-old prostitute, disappeared from Auckland's Karangahape Rd in May 1993 leaving behind a six-month-old baby.

A homicide investigation was launched after her remains were found on Sunset Beach in Port Waikato last May by a woman walking her dog.

Police offered a $50,000 reward this May to encourage tight-lipped associates to offer up new information, and on Monday revealed an exciting new lead that has prompted a fresh search.

Detective Inspector Mark Benefield says a police specialist search group, ESR forensic scientists and homicide investigators are all on site at 51 Heretaunga Ave, Onehunga - Miss Furlong's last known home.

He did not give details on what prompted the search but indicated the teams would likely spend several days searching the inside and outside of the home.

Det Insp Benefield said police had been heartened by the response to the reward cloud, saying it proved Miss Furlong's death was still at the forefront of many people's minds 20 years on.

"People who were close to Jane want this matter resolved and we are determined to do that," he said.

Police have previously struggled to get information from some of those closest to Miss Furlong. In particular, Jane's boyfriend at the time of her disappearance, Danny Norsworthy, has declined to speak to investigators.

Others involved in the court cases Jane was going to be witness to have refused to help.

Police have also yet to speak to a man recorded in Furlong's diary as "Tommy". Miss Furlong may have planned to spend a night with him near the time of her disappearance, police said CCIBA.
